Why do I suffer from cracked heels?

The skin on the plantar area (soles of the feet) is thicker and unlike other areas of the body, it doesn’t have hair.

Dry and cracked (fissured) heels are mostly caused by a loss of elasticity when the skin is allowed to dry out, or when the skin thickens due to a build-up of callus and cracks or breaks under pressure. This occurs most often on the weight-bearing areas of the feet. Other known factors that can cause fissures of the skin on the feet are walking barefoot or in open-backed shoes or sandals, an increase in weight (obesity), circulation problems and other medical conditions. Those with Diabetes should pay particular attention to their feet to ensure fissures do not occur.

Regular use of Flexitol is clinically proven to hydrate dry, cracked heels and feet, preventing fissures and reducing the risk of infection.

7 Tips for dry feet and heels

  1. Regularly inspect your feet, paying attention to any colour changes, appearance or texture.
  2. Always wash your feet daily, ensuring you dry gently and thoroughly between the toes to maintain good foot hygiene.  Change socks daily.
  3. Apply Flexitol Rescue Heel Balm or foot moisturising cream (not body lotion) to your feet daily. Do this more often if they are really dry. Pay particular attention to the sole and heel areas and avoid between the toes.
  4. Walking barefoot should be avoided to help protect your feet from moisture loss, injury and the possibility of infection.
  5. Ensure you are wearing shoes that fit your feet, rather than attempting to make your feet fit your shoes!  Incorrectly sized or poor choice of footwear can cause avoidable foot problems.
  6. Regular exercise!   Walking is an excellent conditioner for the feet and a great way to keep fit.
  7. Foot pain isn’t normal and shouldn’t be ignored!   If your symptoms don’t clear within 1 or 2 days, arrange an appointment with a foot health professional.  Alternatively, your GP or Physiotherapist may be able to help, but remember:  foot health professionals are your foot care experts!

Flexitol Rescue Heel Balm is available from We Fix Feet – your foot care experts in Beeston clinic and Ilkeston clinic.
